First Impression

inSing.comI like Singtel’s and I think it’s a winner. As an internet directory, it is easy to use and as a food, shopping, entertainment portal I couldn’t stop clicking further into the portal. There are so much to explore in…

The local internet directory, classifieds and search space is already crowded by

and many other smaller players. Many of these portals are useless and boring if not downright spammy. Launch Party

inSing Launch Party

I think really stands out among the crowd and is a breath of fresh air for Singapore internet users.

I will definitely try to use it to search for local food and shopping. Well done, Singtel! Criticism

I am sure there are critics out there who may not agree with me. So, what do you think?

Send me what you think at the “Leave a Comment” box below.

  1. Disagree,

look at the homepage. three flashing ads gunning for my attention. layout could do with a lot of work.

typical big corporate attitude towards a website. load it up with features. they should be aiming for simplicity. cut half the information out, remove the ads and try again.

  2. lim,

I think I am blind to such display ads. I totally ignore them. Now that you mentioned, I see them and I think 3 ads on the home page are too much, 1 ad will be more bearable.

  3. They have an absolutely awful marketing campaign. From the lame commercials on CNA, to the horrific repetitive and noisy banner ads online. I tried writing in to complain but they wouldn’t reply.

And seriously, whats so good about the website? The whole yahoo-esque one-stop shop internet service is dying out already. Google has simplified life so much, and of course, Yahoo already does it.

    Lame lame lame.

  4. Apparently not many people like and I am the odd one who thinks Singtel did a better job than SPH and Mediacorp.

@Chris probably engaged the “wrong” people to do their ads campaign. I think the online ad sux but the offline ads were ok. They are wasting money. Anyway I am not a fan of display ad and I am biased.

  5. i second you there….i actually think the ads are great, the site could do with some work but they are only in beta. The offline ads is really a breath of fresh air.

@Chris at the rate you’re going, you sound like a competitor…or someone that got retrenched from singtel? )you actually created a whole blog about them?) lol

  6. Actually at lecture today, and almost 75% of the lecture hall at SMU was laughing hard after seeing the TV ad for It is the funniest thing i’ve seen in a long time…

  7. @Thom4s So was that a laughter of approval because it’s funny or laughter of contempt because your lecture was about poor ad campaign?!

  8. Funny! 😮 )

The lecturer was actually giving a lecture about advertising that gets people talking…and was the only Singaporean example…

  9. @Chris The banner ad’s are annoying….the Television advertisement is very good though! Singaporean’s are way too uptight, typical complain king sia.

  10. Used their directory sites and most of the details are wrong. Can’t find many business listings as well. Considered that it is under Singtel ( assuming they have all the numbers of local businesses ) I find it disappointing.

Reviews also sounds very fake. Either from their own ppl or from the business owner. Note that for restaurants reviews, hungrygowhere actually posted some reviews and seems to be trying to direct traffic to their site. Wonders if ppl from Insing know about this.

Overall, it has a very similar feel to Yahoo. Don’t think I will be a fan of it.

  11. I agree that the website might need some improvements.
I only go there for their Food section, the content in there is not too bad.
Anyway I found a new reason to visit inSing, I’m writing reviews to try to get one of those iPhones they are currently giving out… Gotta love them if I can get one!

  12. I am not in love with the launch ads too, i prefer the durian ads, more local. I like the website, its more local than yahoo, esp where to find good hawker food and shopping deals no need to flip newspapers everyday, more useful than yahoo.

  13. wassup hate to burst your bubble, am interning at insing with nouyen, those were our two cents worth of frank comments. If there is a need to plant “nice” things, its probably logical to say only good things? And dude, there are proxy servers that can hide IP address, I reckon insing people have the sense to mask their IP if they want to self promote.

  14. German Sausage,

Thank you for confirming that you were at office when making the comment.

I checked the sources of the comments when they appeared suspicious. Here’s what made them suspicious:

    1. 2 “nice” comments in a span of 1 minute

    2. Domain name linked to German Sausage is not valid
